What Is a Dental Core Build-Up?

A dental core build-up is a restorative procedure used to rebuild and strengthen a tooth before placing a dental crown. When a tooth has been weakened by decay, fracture, large fillings, or root canal treatment, there may not be enough healthy tooth structure remaining to properly support a crown. A core build-up replaces missing tooth structure and creates a strong foundation for the final restoration, dental crown.

Think of a core build-up as reinforcing the foundation of a house before installing a new roof. While the dental crown protects and restores the visible portion of the tooth, the core build-up helps ensure the crown has adequate support for long-term function and durability. In many cases, a core build-up can help preserve a natural tooth that might otherwise be at risk for fracture or failure.

Why Would I Need a Core Build-Up Before a Crown?

reason for dental core build up

A dental core build-up helps rebuild and strengthen a damaged tooth before a dental crown is placed. When decay or cavities, fractures, large fillings, or root canal treatment have left insufficient tooth structure, a crown alone may not provide adequate support. A core build-up creates a strong foundation for the crown, helping improve stability, function, and long-term durability. Dr. Raoufinia will evaluate the condition of your tooth and determine whether a build-up is recommended as part of your crown treatment.

Is a Core Build-Up the Same as a Dental Crown?

No. A dental core build-up and a dental crown serve different purposes.

A core build-up strengthens and rebuilds the internal structure of the tooth. A dental crown is the custom restoration that covers and protects the outside of the tooth.

The build-up creates the foundation, and the crown provides long-term protection, function, and appearance. While some teeth only require a crown, others benefit from the additional support provided by a core build-up.

Core Build-Up vs. Post and Core

A core build-up is not always the same as a post and core.

A standard build-up uses composite filling like materials to rebuild missing tooth structure. A post and core involves placing a small post inside a root canal-treated tooth to provide additional retention when very little natural tooth remains.

Not every root canal tooth requires a post, and not every build-up requires a post.
