What Is a Dental Core Build-Up?
A dental core build-up is a restorative procedure used to rebuild and strengthen a tooth before placing a dental crown. The build-up creates the foundation, and the crown provides long-term protection, function, and appearance. While some teeth only require a crown, others benefit from the additional support provided by a core build-up.
Core Build-Up vs. Post and Core
A core build-up is not always the same as a post and core.
A standard build-up uses composite filling like materials to rebuild missing tooth structure. A post and core involves placing a small post inside a root canal-treated tooth to provide additional retention when very little natural tooth remains.
Not every root canal tooth requires a post, and not every build-up requires a post.
